Huelga....I mean STRIKE!!!!! BLOG #7

UPR has had a tough time this past school year.  Budget explosions, presidents resigning or being "fired", and now they are again preparing to strike over tution costs.  Luckily, UAA is a private institution and we have been ok through all the turmoil.  However, what if that wasn't the case.  What issues or cause(s) would cause you to strike or protest at UAA?  Here is the assignment:  In third person, write a persuasive essay about a cause or reason to hold a strike at UAA.  (By no means am I encouraging a strike, but the topic is relevant for Puerto Rico and worldwide.)  Make sure you give good details and information about why there is a need to go to the extent of holding a strike.  This assignment will be due by Monday!!!

The president of UAA send a health department inspector and the dinning room pass the inspection but, everybody said that never pass and they pay him some underground money. One of the students confirmed poison food and expired meats

  4. There are many reasons why students in UAA may want to go on a strike. Many students are not happy with the cafeteria service. The prices of the food are very high for students that make a low income. Students that live on campus and eat 3 meals a day, can spend approximately 126 dollars per week. This causes tension in many students because the ones that do have a job make about 200 dollars a month. Another problem many students emphasized was the poor nutrition that they receive in the cafeteria. Most of the meals served are carbohydrates and fried meals. Instead of serving fruits, wheat, cereal many students eat empanadas, mozzarella sticks, and fried potatoes for breakfast. Lunch is full of carbohydrates and a very small portion of salad. Students complain that for dinner they are served pizza, hot dogs, and more fried meals. The variety in the cafeteria is very limited. It seems as the menu is always the same without many options. The cafeteria is known by to the students to have poor hygiene; animals such as roaches have been found in meals. The bathrooms in the cafeteria are not an exception to the poor hygiene. They don´t have soap or toilet paper or the bathrooms are just out of service. The service in the cafeteria is very slow; the food lines take about 20 minutes. If a student is in a rush, they are better off waiting until later. Many students complain about the service, because they are getting charged a lot. The prices are high but the quality of the service is low. At this point in the semester with a month left of classes many students don´t anything in there cafeteria account. The cafeteria service is definitely an issue that would make many student´s in UAA go to strike.

  5. The UAA is now in big problems. Last week the UAA decide to increase the the cost of the credits to a sum of 250 dollars. All students get desperate and angry. All students of the university are planing a big strike for a lot of weeks; and some students begin to abandon the university and start a new student life in the inter university. Now it depends of the university make the change of this high increase of the price of the credits, to start recovering all students of the UAA; if the UAA do not do any change of this are in risk of lose all students of the UAA.

  6. The UAA institution strives to prepare competent professionals that can serve society and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church unselfishly. The mission is carried out in a Christian environment through its curriculum, through its teaching and learning process, its educational research, by the administration, faculty, and staff, but for some reason they are now in a big problem. Students have gone on strike. The UAA have increased the credits to $210 dollars. Students are very angry, lots of them don’t have so much money and for those who qualify for the Beca Pell it’s not enough. In additional they are going to start charging for the parking 89¢ for each our and 5.50 if you want parking all day long. Students are shock with these exclusive news and they do not agree with the university there for they have gone on strike. Professors, students and faculty all have gone on strike and say that if the UAA doesn’t agree to change back how it was they all will get out of the university and lots of them will quit their jobs.

  7. This is not fair! It’s not! Why should vegetarian food be the only food served in the cafeteria? Over half of the students who study at the UAA say that they aren’t vegetarian and are forced to eat outside of school grounds because of this fact. It is understandable that since the UAA is an Adventist University that it is likely to serve vegetarian food at the cafeteria, but not all of its students are vegetarian so why only serve vegetarian food at the cafeteria? The cafeteria should be a place to go and enjoy your meal, sit down and socialize with people, but how can that happen if more than half of the students don’t go because they don’t like what they serve there? The cafeteria should not replace vegetarian food with normal food but instead should serve both. That way if this year half of the students made purchases at the cafeteria, then next year probably the whole student body will make a purchase at the cafeteria. This means more money for the school, more funds, more jobs and most of all more satisfied students. This also may increase in a small amount the students that currently enroll each year to the UAA. Because when asked why not choose the UAA as a possible choice for a University one fourth of high school student’s said because of the food. Think if the cafeteria served both vegetarian and non vegetarian food they could win over that one fourth, which suffice to say when compared to the regular amount of students who enroll at the UAA, it raises the numbers quite a bit. So instead of just serving vegetarian food at the cafeteria why not change, be different? Why not satisfy the needs of every student instead of just the Adventist ones, they all pay their tuition just like everybody else, why not give back to them too?

  8. The UAA was a manifestation of students which they want their voices to be heard by the leaders of the rooter. The strike began early in the morning of Wednesday, thus giving way to be closure of the UAA.
The students claim that it is impossible to continue under the condition that is, since there are several criticisms of the monitoring of the staff management, internal students claim that under these conditions cannot live and that therefore not confident of stocks.
It is incredible to see how these students fighting this fight that monitoring is very poor and security guards not monitored enough without ignoring the entry. On the other hand mrried students who also join this protest, to the campus leaders to do sometime since children are affected by the lack of surveillance and fear for the safety of children. Data collected between students say that sometimes see tanks and strangers around the UAA presidios and sometimes strange things pass around the area of the married and internees of the ladies and youth. all students hope that this problem can be solved as soon as possible, and the students not be affected by this condition and can complete this quarter on time.

  9. It has long been seen this problem in the Adventist University of the Antilles, and nothing is done about it. It's a shame to recognize that this institution has a system so bad Internet for use of its students and staff. There are many who feel this problem, but nobody does anything about it . We know that this service is not free, payment this is done in the registration is performed on each student of the institution. But when using the service is very disappointed for the students by how slow can be. Another point of dissatisfaction is that many sites are blocked by the technicians responsible for this service. Although it is known that there are several pages that are not good for students, but it is noteworthy that there are pages of research and information that are also blocked. Maybe some people who downplay the issue. But this is not a service for which charges? The duty in charge of this area is to improve their services they offer. If the students join a one voice and demand their rights, these may get what they ask for. After all the university administrators say: "Antillean Adventist University, your university." If what they say is true then the students do not have to hesitate a minute to communicate their problems. This is your university?

  10. In the University of the UAA, their many reasons to strike. Students are always complaining about the cafeteria service, the price of the food is very high and it doesn’t tastes of have to many to choose. Is true is an Adventist institution but they had to understand the rights of the students that are not Adventist. Most students in this University are not Adventist and they don’t eat vegetarian food and I think that we pay to be in this institution and they would like to eat the food they love. Is ok they made this institution to tell us about their religion but they have to be like others Christians Universities they respect the other people religions. The other thing is that is very expensive the credits are very high and now they make it higher! This is don’t fear the economy is this moments is very bad a lot of students parents are not working and is very difficult to pay for an Institutions like this. So let’s strike for our Rights !

  11. University of Puerto Rico students successfully, and almost without a significant incident, paralyzed academic and administrative operations at the Río Piedras campus Wednesday after university officials had vowed to keep the institution open.
A group of several dozen students who had stayed within campus premises since Tuesday night joined others coming into the campus on Wednesday morning and successfully locked the gate on Barbosa Avenue as early as 6:00 am.
At the gate five or six university guardsmen had tried to stop the students in a kind of tug o’ war with them to control the gate. In the melee some of the guardsmen and students were crushed between one another and exchanged some blows. Meanwhile, several others were pepper sprayed in a confusing incident.
“By insisting in keeping the gates open the administration is trying to provoke a confrontation,” said Student Negotiating Committee member Adriana Mulero, who Wednesday morning called the first of the two days stoppage “a success.

  12. The strike is by the flamboyant. The flamboyant is a photo book. The only thing that has this book is photos of various university activities. By the flamboyant all students have to pay 65.00 dollars per semester. Worse still, many students never receive the book. Everyone knows that this is a theft of student money. This year the student receives the books of 2007-2008. Mean that these students lost their Money and this year students also lost their money. Too many students will be hard to pay the tuition. The students do not want to pay a book that never receives.

  13. There are many reasons to start a strike at the UAA. First the health insurance, why the UAA only approves the health plan for the semester. They dont understand that some students that maybe are not able to study at summer because they work, enjoy that benefit at a low price. The actually give the extension service of the plan but for a low price of $100 a month. Another thing, the flamboyan fee. What for the students of the UAA pays for something that they aren't going to use it or appear on it. The UAA should collect that money to students near to graduate of their institution. Also the parking lot is to small and far from the buildings. The UAA has to keep in mind that students can have physical conditions that can't make them walk long distances. As a educational institution the UAA should concern more about the student and not their pocket.

  14. In the UAA you can protest for have the liberty to have table games like pool, cheest , scrabble , sodoku or games that is good for the lunch time . sometimes is great to play these games is very educative and is very excited . Strike for have tables games is ones of the strike that is god to do . make competition with other student are great interective way this is another reason about why is great to have this games . We can compited with other university no matter is public or private is great to creat a habitat that every body comunicated and make new friend . the most important about to get successful strike is the union if you don’t have the disposition the strike don’t have a respect or value to get a great victory. If this university open more his mind he could be the best university in our island . this is a reson to get strike in UAA

  15. One of the things that most bother the students that live in the dorms on campus is that the price of food from the cafeteria has increased. This will greatly affect the students, because the food is so costly and the cafeteria account end or go down much faster. Another thing that not helps is the control that the dean have on the students, they think that the decisions taken are not correct. They fight to get out on weekends to eat outside the university because on half of the semester they no have money in the cafeteria account. Many of them are angry, they feel as if in a prison and everybody is hungry everyday because of the bad decisions taken by the administration. And another thing, why is always have vegetarian food in the cafeteria and there is no balance to satisfy all students?, students should go on strike to express their thoughts and be heard.

  16. i strongly agree with what the students of the upr are doing against the school for many reason. for example uua is a private and a christian institution. thank god for that, because if it was public university the school would have been out of business a long time ago. the lawsuits that the school would have year after year would make it go bankrupt. one perfect example, my things were stolen out of my room. the cost of my thing was estimated to be about 4000 dollars. uaa knows the people that took my things and yet they do nothing. the reason why they dont do nothing is because the students who took my things are pastors kids and their really known in uaa. now tell me if what they're doing is unlawful. if this were to happen to anyone else they would have gotten kicked out the same day that it happen. this is suppose to be a christian institution and yet the people who work here are crooks. uaa really doesn't care about you not one bit, they only care about getting ur money. i see uaa like a giant pimp and where his B. another thing that bothers me is that im running out underwear due to the fact that the washers and dryer dont work in the boys dorm for about 3 weeks now. do u think the dean of students gives a crap about the students? i dont think so, she's too busy worried about how the school looks in the outside. so i tell everyone in upr and uaa, if u feel strongly about something or feel that ur moral are getting violated. please just don't stand there and let it happen. fight for ur rights. because at the end of the day if you think about it the school needs us. a school can not run without students.

  17. Students at the UAA are about to go on a strike this week. They are tired of the old unkept buildings, the vegetarian boring food, and most of all the expensive credits. Yesterday almost all the students reunited at the parking and after hours of debating with 95% percent of the votes they decided to go on strike. After hearing from the students intentions the president of the UAA began negotiations to stop the students from paralizing the campus. Luckily, even though the tution price is still the same he allowed the cafeteria to cook chicken, fish, and on some fridays even steak!!

The UAA student are strike to improve variety of food in the cafeteria because the people repeat the same everyday and that improve the attention of student to eat in the cafeteria and no exit to the campus to eat far away. Other thing because the student strike is to improve the central building to painting and repair something defect that improve to the university because the visitor have a goog impression of the university and up tha rated and that so nice
